Collapsed Drain Repair in Leicester

A collapsed drain has lost its structural shape entirely — relining is no longer an option. Blockages that return almost immediately after clearing, soft patches or sinking ground in the garden, slow drains across the whole house, or sewage smells outside can all point to a collapse. We confirm with CCTV before quoting any excavation, so you're never charged for guesswork.

Signs of a Collapsed Drain

Persistent blockages that return straight after clearing; soft ground or a visible sinkhole over the drain run; multiple fixtures draining slowly at once; sewage smell in the garden; overflowing manholes. Any of these warrants a CCTV survey before anything else.

What Causes a Drain to Collapse

Ageing clay and pitch-fibre pipes are the main culprits across Leicester. Pitch-fibre was common in postwar construction — estates like Glenfield, Braunstone and Beaumont Leys — and it deforms and collapses as it ages. Clay is more durable but cracks under ground movement or sustained root pressure. Heavy vehicles parked or driven over a shallow drain run can also cause failure.

How We Repair It

CCTV to locate the exact failure point and measure the affected length → excavate only the failed section, not the whole run → remove and replace with modern PVC drain pipe → backfill and reinstate the surface (whether that's soil, tarmac or block paving). We can usually handle the full job in one visit.

Patch Repair vs Full Excavation

If only a short section has failed, a patch repair (excavating just the collapsed section) is far cheaper than a full pipe replacement. The CCTV survey tells us exactly how long the damaged section is.

Frequently Asked Questions

Blocked drain or collapsed drain — how do I tell the difference?
A blocked drain clears after jetting and stays clear. A collapsed pipe blocks again almost immediately, or the CCTV footage shows the pipe has lost its round shape. We can tell you within minutes of the survey.
Will you dig up my whole garden?
No. We only excavate the section that has failed. CCTV lets us pin-point the location so digging is kept to a minimum.
How long does a collapsed drain repair take?
Most single-section repairs take one day. Longer runs or difficult access may take two.
Is the drain my responsibility or Severn Trent's?
Lateral drains within your property boundary are your responsibility. Once they join the shared sewer in the street, Severn Trent takes over. We can help you work out which applies.
