Blocked Sink & Kitchen Drain in Leicester

Kitchen sinks block with cooking fat, grease and food particles — the fat solidifies in the pipe as it cools, progressively narrowing the bore until water won't drain at all. Bathroom sinks block with hair and soap residue. Both are common, both are fixable fast.

Why Kitchen Sinks Block

Fat, oil and grease (FOG) is the dominant cause. It goes down the drain as a warm liquid and solidifies as it cools, building up on pipe walls with each wash-up. Eventually it creates a solid plug. In older Leicester terraces with narrow cast-iron waste pipes, this process happens faster. Food scraps caught in the trap compound the problem.

Why Bathroom Sinks Block

Hair is the main culprit, tangled around the plug and in the trap. Soap scum binds the hair together into a solid mass. Leicester's moderately hard water deposits limescale on pipe walls, which makes the hair and soap adhere more readily.

DIY vs When to Call

Clearing the trap (the U-bend under the sink) is a DIY job if the blockage is shallow. Pouring boiling water slowly down a kitchen drain can soften fresh grease. Baking soda and vinegar creates a froth but does little to shift solid fat. Once the blockage is past the trap, or if the trap is clear but the drain is still slow, it's time to call us.

How We Clear and Prevent Recurrence

We locate the blockage, clear it with rods or jetting, and inspect the trap and pipework. We'll advise on a grease trap if the kitchen drain is a recurring problem, and on a hair catcher for bathroom drains.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my kitchen sink draining slowly?
Almost always cooking fat and grease partially blocking the pipe. The blockage narrows over time until it stops completely. Catching it early is cheaper.
Will baking soda and vinegar fix a blocked sink?
It may shift a very fresh, very light grease deposit. It won't shift a solid fat blockage or a hair plug. For a drain that has already stopped or is near-blocked, call us.
Can one blocked sink affect other drains?
If the blockage is in a shared waste pipe (common in older terraces), yes — a kitchen sink blockage can affect the bathroom waste on the same wall, or vice versa.
How much does it cost?
We quote upfront. No call-out charge; you pay only for work carried out.
